Other acts of texturing by ex-members including posts on social media or TV appearances are also included as part of the analysis. I adopt this ‘triangulation’, i.e., the combination of data sources in the study of the same phenomenon (see Denzin 1978; Denzin and Lincoln 2005), for a number of reasons. Firstly, it secures a richer and thicker data set, grounded in a more well-rounded investigation of a topic considerably under-explored in the literature. Secondly, we deal with different frames encompassing thematic meanings of a subjective nature and which are mainly constructed in the minds of exiting members. Combining sources of narration by different ex-members who had belonged to the same movement can, at the same time, help the convergence towards truthfulness and full meaningfulness about the whole phenomenon of disengagement itself. The truthfulness is created by the confirmation and corroboration among frames that cover all domains of the disengagement phenomenon and that could be contradictory or conflictual. The frames, based on human experience and understanding, refer to subjective accounts and events brought into a textual shape from the opinions and memory of exiting members. Therefore, the best option is to compare and contrast the frames as multiple outcomes of different departure narratives. The bias inherent in any one particular data source can be cancelled out (or perhaps confirmed) when used in conjunction with the other source. Analysis also adds another layer of verification, this time beyond the level of texts of narrativization. I go to the original sources as a necessary step of gaining knowledge.

Admittedly, the sampling in interviews are subject to biases as the thirty-two individuals were selected on a ‘snowballing’ basis. For example, in Turkey, ex-members whom I interviewed on the first day of my arrival in Istanbul introduced me to their friends and acquaintances who also departed from the same group and who could share the same characteristics. As the sample builds up in this ‘non-probability’ technique, also adopted in Egypt, the UK and Qatar, the data was gathered. However, the technique can be justified as I was looking for a variety of exiting members including those who were hidden and difficult to locate, especially in Egypt’s conflict environment, full of suspicion and mistrust drawn from the official anti-Brotherhood hostility and public outrage. The snowballing technique is justified to avoid more problems in this kind of research, problems that also have to do with the characteristics of exiting members who are ready to talk to researchers and the public in general. The interviewees who are ready to talk are mostly those of the apostate type, i.e., those who have ‘louder’ voices as they can dramatically and publicly narrate their experiences, ‘reverse’ their loyalties and even become ‘professional enemies’ of the movement they have left (Bromley 1998; Introvigne 1999). I was not the first one to talk to the apostate type of those exiting members as they enjoy a wider access to other researchers and media outlets in and out of Egypt. Benefitting from contextual shifts such
